Intro to the Luminous Subcontinent of Ath-Thurayya
The “Luminous Subcontinent of Ath-Thurayya,” as it is melodramatically known, is a region south of the empire of Rhun. Much of Ath-Thurayya consists of vast deserts, but the valleys of the mighty Zubani and peaceful Suhaqa rivers gave rise to fertile lands from which a great civilization grew. The confluence of these rivers forms the great delta of Zusu, around which was built the city of the same name – jewel of Ath-Thurayya.
At the dawn of the world, the First Ones appeared to the Thurayyans in the form of Sphinxes – mysterious creatures with human faces and the bodies of lions. Proud and majestic by day, silent and terrifying by night, the Sphinxes tested their mortal worshippers with fiendish riddles. Success might be rewarded with aid and guidance; failure often brought cruel torments for the Sphinxes’ amusement.
Much as the dragons of Draeland eventually bonded with their most powerful followers and made them kings, so too did the Sphinxes select their favorite pets… [to be continued]
